"My gut feeling" - Michael Owen on Alexander-Arnold's World Cup chances

Pundit Michael Owen has given his verdict on Trent Alexander-Arnold's World Cup chances.

The tournament will kick-off in Qatar come November. Owen believes that England boss Gareth Southgate will select Alexander-Arnold in his squad.

However, the former Red does not see the Liverpool right-back starting ahead of Chelsea's Reece James.

“Gareth Southgate has not made an immediate decision on Trent,” Owen said, as quoted by the Daily Mail.

“If you look back over the last couple of years he has chosen not to put him in there even when his performances for Liverpool probably warranted it.

“Southgate tended to stick with Reece James, Kieran Trippier or Kyle Walker.

“Everyone can see how good Trent is. My gut feeling is that he will go to the World Cup but I think Reece James will be the starting right-back.”

Anfield Watch Verdict

As things stand, we completely agree with Owen's take. It is common knowledge that Alexander-Arnold is currently struggling to perform.

Therefore, we can't see Southgate giving the Scouser much of an opportunity at this year's World Cup (if selected).

Perhaps Alexander-Arnold's recent form is a result of trying too hard. The 23-year-old would be desperate to feature at the World Cup.

Every player wants to represent their country. Hopefully we see Alexander-Arnold return to his best sooner rather than later.

The right-back looks quite miserable out on the pitch at the moment. It is obvious that he is not enjoying his football.
