"Money shouldn't be an issue": Marco van Basten sends transfer message to Liverpool target

Marco van Basten believes Ryan Gravenberch should be at a club where regular game time is the main priority, whether it's at Bayern Munich or another club in Europe.

The Dutch midfielder has been linked with a move to Liverpool recently, while Premier League leaders Arsenal have also been credited with an interest. Speaking to The Liverpool Echo, as cited by Anfield Watch's Twitter account, Van Basten said money shouldn't be a factor, especially for a young player who has struggled for game time since swapping Ajax for Bayern Munich last summer.

"You just have to be sure that you are always in the starting line-up. Otherwise, it is far too little to make such a choice. You have to be able to really give that club something.

"Moving away? That's asking for the same problems. Go somewhere [where] you play. If you are not of added value or you have doubts, then you should not go. Money shouldn't be an issue for guys like that."

Gravenberch signed a five-year deal with the Bundesliga giants in the summer of 2022 for a fee believed to be in the region of €23 million including add ons but hasn't featured regularly for the club this season. He is reportedly frustrated due to his lack of game time, but with Thomas Tuchel replacing Julian Nagelsmann on the touchline at the Allianz Arena, his situation could well change in the weeks ahead.

ANFIELD WATCH VERDICT

Marco van Basten is absolutely spot-on about Gravenberch. At the age of 20, he'd be best advised to play for a club where he'll get regular game time under his belt. With Liverpool in desperate need of midfield reinforcements, Anfield could be the perfect destination for him.

Having made a bright start to his career at Ajax, he forced his way into the national team picture for the Netherlands but wasn't part of Louis van Gaal's squad for the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar. Gravenberch is currently unhappy with his situation at Bayern Munich, but with the Bavarian giants reportedly unwilling to part ways with him after Tuchel's arrival, will Liverpool still get their man this summer? Only time will tell.
