Mo Salah joins elite club alongside Harry Kane & Thierry Henry with latest goals
The records just keep tumbling for Mohamed Salah. The Egyptian left for AFCON duty in spectacular style on New Year's Day, with two goals and an assist to his name in the 4-2 win over Newcastle United.
Despite missing a first-half penalty, Salah made amends early in the second half, tapping home a close-range effort teed up beautifully by Darwin Nunez for his 150th Premier League goal for the Reds.
In the 78th minute, he then laid it on a plate for substitute Cody Gakpo to add the team's third with an outside-of-the-foot cross from the right.
Then, just as stoppage time was approaching, Diogo Jota won a penalty, gifting Salah the chance to add his second of the game - and he duly obliged, bringing the Egyptian's tally for the season in the league to an incredible 14 goals and eight assists.
In doing so, the 31-year-old became just the third player to amass 20+ goal involvements (goals and assists) in seven consecutive Premier League seasons.
He joins the elite company of Harry Kane, who did so in nine successive seasons between 2014/15 and 2022/23, and Thierry Henry (seven seasons from 1999/00 to 2005/06).
Salah also set a personal best during the match, registering a 2.74(xG) in a single game.
Jota back at the right time
While Salah didn't actually play well by any stretch of the imagination, his goal contributions will be sorely missed in the coming month, with him potentially missing up to six league matches.
However, the return of Diogo Jota from injury seems to have come at the right time. The Portuguese made his comeback by scoring the second goal to seal the 2-0 win away at Burnley on Boxing Day, before bagging an assist and winning the second penalty against Newcastle on Monday - again off the bench.
Although right-wing isn't his most natural position, he has deputised for Salah in that position in the past.
