Mo Salah set a new Liverpool record tonight as the Reds faced Sparta Prague in the UEFA Europa League Last 16. The Egyptian thought he'd set it last week.

Liverpool took on Sparta Prague tonight in the second leg of their UEFA Europa League Last 16 tie. The Reds started with a 5-1 head start but despite that, Mo Salah started the game.

Jurgen Klopp is eager to build up the Egyptian's match fitness. Salah had only made four appearances in 2024, with his last start coming on New Year's Day. The Liverpool boss made it clear that his star forward's rhythm isn't there after his cameo against Manchester City at the weekend.

It took him under 10 minutes to find that rhythm. Salah took advantage of repeated errors in Sparta's backline (as just about everyone did) to score early on and with that, he set a Liverpool record.

Salah went into the game on 19 goals this season. His early goal meant he became the first Liverpool player ever to score 20 goals in seven successive seasons.

Ian Rush very nearly did this, of course, but left for Juventus after six seasons of 20+ goals. His first season back saw him score just 11 times (though, he'd follow that with 28 and 30-goal campaigns).

Roger Hunt was awfully close, too, but had two seasons of 'only' 19 goals that prevented a streak like Salah's.

And so the Egyptian has an opportunity to make more history at Liverpool. He's already the club's all-time Premier League top scorer and fourth on the all-time list for all competitions.

Salah is also Liverpool's top-scorer in Europe and the more he plays, the more records he finds to break.

Thursday night saw him break another one - though, he thought he'd done it in the first leg against Sparta Prague. Salah saw a goal disallowed that would have taken him to 20 for the season.

Of course, this one really was a matter of when, not if. Salah has another record - and there will be more to come.
