Mo Salah is trying a new tactic with Liverpool. Will it finally force them into action over his contract?

Mo Salah, Virgil van Dijk and Trent Alexander-Arnold are all out of contract in the summer. It still feels mad to say and yet it's been the case since the campaign kicked off.

Liverpool are yet to agree new deals for any of them, despite talks having been going on for months. The Reds, it seems, are not sure about renewing any of them.

Or at least, renewing them on the contracts they want. That, ultimately, is the sticking point here.

Both Salah and Van Dijk are well into their 30s now. They won't actually be top players for much longer and Liverpool will be nervous about paying them tonnes of cash when a decline could kick in at any moment.

With Alexander-Arnold, it's different. Liverpool are quite blatantly competing with Real Madrid over his signature and the Reds are unsure about paying enormous wages to him. Even if they are sure, he may not accept.

Mo Salah's big campaign

Salah has been the most vocal about his contract situation. In fact, he's been blatantly putting pressure on Liverpool whenever he could.

He deliberately sought out journalists at the end of November to tell them he hadn't received a contract offer. The Egyptian then very consciously referred to this as his 'last year' with Liverpool in an interview just this week.

And now we've got a new tactic. Thus far, Salah's stance has always been about him wanting to continue and Liverpool not offering him anything.

But on Monday, Salah posted a picture to Twitter of himself in the Manchester United fixture. There are only two other people present in the photo: Van Dijk and Alexander-Arnold.

No, he's not just supporting Alexander-Arnold after the criticism. And no, it's not an innocent photo from the match.

This was posted to generate conversation and for the first time, Salah is heavily referencing the other contract situations at Liverpool. These are his friends, the other leaders in the squad who are set to leave with him.

There's no comment to the photo and the reaction was exactly what you'd expect. People are commenting on the contract situation in the wake of the United draw and once again turning their frustrations to the decision-makers at Liverpool.

There is zero chance Salah and his people didn't predict that.

Now, we're not suggesting that Richard Hughes and Co. will see this and immediately offer up contracts. But it does show that Salah's contract campaign is no longer just about him.

He's turning up the heat a little here and if we had to guess, we imagine he'll start referencing the other two a little more. Then we'll just need to see if that works.
