Michael Owen on Liverpool's 2021-22 Champions League hopes
Former Red Michael Owen has recently spoken about Liverpool's 2021-22 Champions League hopes.
The Reds have marched into the knockout stages of Europe's elite competition with two games to spare after defeating Atletico Madrid 2-0 at Anfield on Wednesday night.
With that being the case, Owen believes that Liverpool are the favourites to win the competition.
“I think English football and the Premier League is so far ahead of everyone else at the moment and getting even stronger,” Owen told BT Sport, as quoted by The Sport Review.
“We’ve been ahead for a few years anyway and then we’ve taken the two best players in the Italian league in Ronaldo and Lukaku.
“Lionel Messi’s gone to a weaker league so the Spanish league has got weaker. I can never really take the French league as seriously as maybe I should.
“We’re taking the best managers as well. I think the biggest dangers to Liverpool are probably Man City and Chelsea.
“You look at the Anfield factor, I just can’t get that out of my head. Good luck going there in the second leg of a European tie. They are almost unbeatable at Anfield.
“You’d have to say that Liverpool are favourites.”
ANFIELD WATCH VERDICT
We agree with Owen that Liverpool can win the 2021-22 Champions League title. The Anfield crowd will definitely aid the Reds in the latter stages of the competition.
The Anfield support is known as the 12th man for a reason. Also, it is worth mentioning that Liverpool are a very good side.
Back in 2019, the Reds came up against Tottenham Hotspur in the 2019 Champions League final.
Liverpool ended up defeating Spurs in Madrid to secure the trophy. What we are saying is that the current Reds team have experienced winning the Champions League.
That aforementioned achievement should leave Liverpool in good stead when the knockout stages arrive.
