"Massive fan" - Steven Gerrard names the midfielder he wanted to play with
Former Liverpool player Steven Gerrard has revealed which midfielder he would have liked to have played with at Anfield.
Gerrard, who is now the manager of Aston Villa, recently completed an interview with BT Sport.
The Scouser was asked to name one midfielder he would’ve liked to have taken to the field with during his career. Gerrard said the following.
“I’ve always been a massive fan of Roy Keane, not Man United,” he told BT Sport, as quoted by the Liverpool Echo.
“I think for all our generation watching Roy Keane’s consistency levels, how he went about it, I like to get into the box and having someone who would have been able to protect me in there and do some of my dirty work. I think he was the best at it so I would probably go with Roy Keane.”
Anfield Watch Verdict
Keane was a superb player. The midfielder was as hard as nails.
Keane went on to win seven Premier League titles and the European Cup with Manchester United.
To claim several major honours in the game, you have to possess a fair bit of ability.
Therefore, we would have loved to have seen Keane at Liverpool. But, it just wasn't meant to be.
Even without the Irishman alongside Gerrard in midfield, the Scouser still went on to have a brilliant career at Anfield.
Gerrard scored 185 goals and registered 154 assists in 708 appearances for Liverpool's first-team.
The 42-year-old also won nine major trophies at Anfield. Hopefully Gerrard's managerial career turns out to be half as successful.
