Despite the Reds excellent first half of the campaign, it has become clear that one position in particular needs to be strengthened as soon as possible.

That position is of course left-back, and concerns around the longevity of Andrew Robertson and Kostas Tsimikas have left Liverpool very publicly searching for another option.

A few names have been linked with an Anfield switch, but a deal completed by Manchester United may have just set Liverpool’s move into action.

Manchester United officially announce Patrick Dorgu

Ruben Amorim’s side have now confirmed their first signing since that Portuguese boss arrived at Old Trafford, Patrick Dorgu who formerly played for Lecce.

Dorgu had been a target of Liverpool, who were also linked with a winter move for the 20-year-old, but the Reds missing out on the Denmark international isn’t necessarily a bad thing.

Another man who had been linked with a move to either Liverpool or Manchester United is Bournemouth’s Milos Kerkez, who will reportedly be on the move this summer if he doesn’t move in January, with Bournemouth demanding £50 million for the 21-year-old's signature.

Now that Amorim has completed the signing of Dorgu, United can be practically ruled out of the chase for Kerkez, and so the door has been left wide open for Liverpool to get their man.

Have Liverpool missed out on Dorgu?

Although a highly rated prospect, Dorgu is untested in the Premier League and has only made 53 Serie A appearances.

Although the Italian topflight is a highly competitive league, the level of the Premier League is definitely a step up and will take some adjusting to.

Kerkez by comparison has already made 52 Premier League appearances for Bournemouth, and he also played in the Eredivisie 33 times for AZ Alkmaar before he joined the Cherries.

The Hungarian is by no means the finished article, but he is a lot closer to it than Dorgu and would not need to adjust too much if he were to make the switch from the south coast to Merseyside.

It remains to be seen whether Liverpool will complete a deal for Kerkez, but the road to the transfer has become much clearer with Manchester United out of the race.
