How much Manchester City could earn from Leroy Sane to Liverpool transfer

Liverpool's rivals Manchester City would be in line for a windfall, if the Reds were to sign Leroy Sane.

Jurgen Klopp's side have been tipped to move for the Bayern Munich winger next summer, in the event of Mohamed Salah's much-speculated sale to the Saudi Pro League.

One report claims Sane is top of Liverpool's wish list and the Reds could even break their own transfer record to land the 27-year-old.

It's not the first time Sane has been linked with Anfield, and the Germany international has had chances to link up with Klopp in the past.

However, if Liverpool were to complete a transfer, it would indirectly benefit one of their big rivals. As reported by the Manchester Evening News, City inserted a sell-on clause into the deal that saw Sane move to Bayern Munich back in 2020.

The revelation is unlikely to deter Liverpool's plans, if the interest in genuine, however it would be a small win for City, who hardly need the extra capital.

How much would Manchester City make from Leroy Sane's sale?

According to the report that clause is set at 10%. However, it is unclear whether the Citizens would be entitled to a full 10% of the money from their former player's transfer, or rather 10% of the profit on the resale.

How much it would take to lure Sane away from Bayern Munich is also unknown.

The player has less than two years remaining on his current contract with the German champions, though the report from the Mirror which prompted the speculation claims the Reds could 'smash' their club transfer record to make the deal happen.

Currently, Liverpool's biggest transfer is the £85m, including add-ons, paid out for Darwin Nuñez and it seems unlikely that FSG might shell out more than that for a player who will be 28 next year and is on course to be a free agent in 2025.

However, in the hypothetical event that a deal cost £90m, City would take £9m from the deal if it's a straight percentage.

If the 10% relates to profit only, City would likely only bank around £3.5m, because Sane's move to Germany in 2020 cost around £55m.

Speaking back in 2018, Sane revealed that he spoke to Jurgen Klopp about coming to Liverpool before ultimately deciding to join City.

“Jürgen was calling me too, talking to me. That was before I joined City. He did a good job at [Borussia] Dortmund – I met him when he was there. He’s a good guy, nice guy – honest. He [has] worked well with Liverpool,” he said.

Predominantly a right winger, but also capable of operating on the left, Sane has started the 2023/24 season in fine form with six goals in seven Bundesliga outings.
