Within the first 15 minutes, Arne Slot's side took the lead thanks to a brilliantly orchestrated corner.
It saw Dominik Szoboszlai running short towards the edge of the five-yard box, laying a pass into the path of Mohamed Salah.
The Egyptian was left unmarked on the edge of the penalty area, and he did not disappoint. In true Salah custom he buried the ball into the back of the net.
The set-piece completely caught Guardiola's side off guard and it was all masterminded by a former Manchester City analyst.
Aaron Briggs, the man behind Liverpool's opening goal against Man City
Briggs was brought in as a first team individual development coach last summer after spending stints at Wolfsburg and AS Monaco.
His role has seen him move into more hybrid responsibilities and he has also taken charge of the Reds' set-pieces in an interim position.
This has seen Briggs often use Mac Allister for the club's corners rather than what was the custom under Jurgen Klopp, which is Liverpool's full-backs taking the corners.
Briggs' task is to find the small margins Liverpool can exploit and he's been credited with being the key to for the Reds beating AC Milan in the Champions League earlier this season for spotting that Mike Maignan was slow to come off his line from set pieces and planning to take advantage of this.
That game saw both Konate and Van Dijk scoring and it looks like Briggs has delivered another masterclass.
Briggs clearly saw a weakness Liverpool could exploit in this game as well and the Reds took complete advantage of it.
What makes this all the sweeter is that for most of his career, Briggs has been working at Manchester City.
In fact, he spent two years working under Pep Guardiola as a first team match analyst from 2018 until 2020.
