Manchester City are also lining up a new manager as Liverpool get their search underway for Jurgen Klopp's successor. Pep Guardiola's contract expires in 2025.

Liverpool are now starting an incredibly difficult process - finding Jurgen Klopp's successor. The German announced on Friday that he's stepping down as manager at the end of the season.

While Xabi Alonso is the early favourite to take over, Liverpool have not secured any kind of deal with him. In fact, they won't be striking a deal with anyone just yet as they're after a sporting director first.

The Reds are unlikely to announce a new manager before the end of the season as a result. CEO Billy Hogan discussed the process in a press conference earlier today and it's what you'd expect - Liverpool won't be particularly public with their moves.

It will be a very difficult job, of course, as Jurgen Klopp is arguably the best manager on the planet. The world's best available managers will be on the Reds' shortlist and they'll be hoping to secure their no.1 man.

Only, they're apparently not the only ones looking. The Telegraph reports that Manchester City are also lining up potential new managers in case Pep Guardiola steps down in 2025.

Guardiola's contract expires at the end of next season, meaning City want to get ahead of things. They're now looking at Ange Postecoglu and will keep an eye on how he does at Tottenham Hotspur.

But it also means that Liverpool aren't alone in sounding out the world's top managers. City will be doing the same, creating competition in an already difficult process.

While it's entirely possible that Guardiola simply remains with City and signs a new contract, all of Liverpool's top options will have it in the back of their mind that their could be another highly-desirable hotseat that needs filling next year.
