Luton Town vs Liverpool – Predictions

Liverpool head south to newly promoted Luton Town this weekend, looking to make it three Premier League wins in a row.

The Reds face 18th-placed Luton in their first trip to Kenilworth Road since an FA Cup third round tie back in January 2008. Rafa Benitez's side could only draw 1-1 that day, but won the replay 5-0, with Steven Gerrard scoring a hat-trick.

Things have changed somewhat since then. The Hatters actually finished the 2007/08 season relegated from League One, which shows just how far they've come in the last decade and a half.

The Reds are, however, heavy favourites going into the clash this Sunday, with Rob Edwards' side struggling for any real form since their return to the top flight.

Liverpool, meanwhile, are on a roll and seeking five wins in a row in all competitions, following their Carabao Cup win amid stormy conditions away at Bournemouth midweek.

Sam McGuire: Everything points towards a Liverpool win so that is what I'm going with.

The Reds are in rampant form and all of the attackers are firing. Luton have a decent defensive record at home but they tend to sit deep and look to soak up pressure. Previous iterations of this Liverpool team might've struggled but Jurgen Klopp has multiple ways to win a match now and I think this plays a significant part in the outcome.

Players are back from suspension too so the Reds have a deep squad right now.

Ewan Ross-Murray: Last season, this would have been a guaranteed defeat for Liverpool.

It’s exactly the kind of banana skin that the Reds would have slipped on, as they did so often on the road against the division’s strugglers.

However, the positivity and optimism around the club right now gives me hope. While the defence has looked a little shaky at times this season, Luton have been pretty dreadful going forward, with set-pieces their main threat.

While that could spell trouble for the Reds, I think Klopp’s men should have more than enough in the tank to get past the Hatters. It’s probably not a match that will blow the neutrals away, but Liverpool should get the job done at Kenilworth Road.

Andrew Headspeath: This was a tie that many Liverpool fans would have searched out nervously when the fixture list was first announced but, in truth, the Reds' first visit to the much mythologised Kenny Road is not as scary a prospect as it looked over the summer.

Rob Edwards' side have struggled to compete in the top flight so far and are yet to win at home.

After the threat of a mini-blip pre-international break, Liverpool look like a 'proper' team again – one with the fire power to blast past most sides in the division.

Klopp needs to make the most of this gentler run of Premier League fixtures before the meeting with Manchester City at the end of the month. They should make it three league wins (and three clean sheets) in a row here.
