Luton Town 1-1 Liverpool: Player Ratings

A returning Luis Diaz came to the rescue to save Liverpool from humiliation, salvaging a point as the Reds drew 1-1 with Luton Town in Sunday's late-afternoon kick-off.

The hosts took the lead in the 80th minute, with Tahith Chong slotting past Alisson to put the Hatters on the verge of a first ever home Premier League win.

However, Luis Diaz came off the bench to score a stoppage-time equaliser for Liverpool - a goal charged with emotion given his family struggles over the past week.

Liverpool had the better of the chances in the first half, with Darwin Nunez firing against woodwork before Diogo Jota's low-driven shot was well saved by Thomas Kaminski.

Luton held firm, however, and the game remained goalless going into the break.

After the restart, the hosts continued to frustrate Jurgen Klopp's side, causing Reds players to resort to incredibly speculative efforts from long range.

Nunez would then register arguably his worst miss in a Liverpool shirt, skying from point blank range to jeers from the Luton faithful.

10 minutes later, Tahith Chong finished off a ferocious counter-attack to give the hosts a deserving lead, considering their resilience.

As the Hatters looked to hold on, who else but Luis Diaz would rise to the occasion in the 95th minute, heading past Kaminski to steal a point for his side.

A special end to what was otherwise a dire evening for Liverpool.

Nothing to do in the first half. Collected a cross after the break, then massive save to deny Carlton Morris. Couldn't do much for the Luton goal.

TRENT ALEXANDER-ARNOLD (RB): 6

Showed off his passing range, playing Nunez in with a cutting through ball, only for the Uruguayan to strike the bar. Defensively, however, he did struggle up against Chiedozie Ogbene.

IBRAHIMA KONATE (CB): 7

Went on an astonishing, Joel Matip-esque driving run eight minutes in, going from box to box and nearly slotting Mo Salah in on goal. A couple sloppy challenges meant he was lucky not to be in the book at half-time.

VIRGIL VAN DIJK (CB): 7

Skewed a clearance early on that nearly gave Luton an opening on goal, but was assured after that.

JOE GOMEZ (LB): 6

Couple sloppy fouls but for the most part did what was asked of him at the back and occasionally offered something going forward. Subbed.

ALEXIS MAC ALLISTER (CM): 4

Off the pace, losing the ball and being bypassed far too often. Booked for bringing Andros Townsend down after sloppily miscontrolling the ball from Liverpool's own short corner. The victim of an unfortunate eye poke by Ogbene.

RYAN GRAVENBERCH (CM): 6

Ghosted for large periods of the first half. Much improved after the break, producing some darting runs and showing flashes of brilliance. Forced an important save from Kaminski. Subbed.

DOMINIK SZOBOSZLAI (CM): 5

Abnormally subpar from Szoboszlai, only really able to produce anything of note from dead ball scenarios. Subbed.

MOHAMED SALAH (RW): 5

Not much luck in the first half, often being ushered out of the danger zones by Gabriel Osho. Blazed half-volley over the bar from inside the box.

DARWIN NUNEZ (ST): 6

Constantly involved, firing numerous efforts towards goal. Hit the woodwork after latching onto a phenomenal Alexander-Arnold through ball, just needed a more delicate finish. However, he skied an absolute sitter after the break from pretty much point blank range. A shocker of a miss. Very Darwin moment.

DIOGO JOTA (LW): 6

Forced a big save out of Kaminski when the game was goalless. Other than that, struggled to get in the game. Subbed.

Instant impact off the bench, as he so often has done this season. Assisted Diaz for the equaliser.

KOSTAS TSIMIKAS (JOE GOMEZ, 66'): 5

Couple questionable deliveries, lucky not to go in the book for a cynical challenge on Tahith Chong.

CODY GAKPO (DIOGO JOTA, 66'): 6

Saw his flick from close range trickle past the post.

With everything going on in his life, he managed to come through for Liverpool and save his team at the death. Unbelievable moment.
