Nunez has struggled for minutes under Arne Slot and he just doesn't quite seem to fit into the Dutchman's plans.

Considering he arrived at Anfield as one of the club's most expensive transfers of all time - his performances overall despite having some sparks have been disappointing.

It's why the Reds are open to a new chapter. And it's why they are open to the possibility of signing a replacement for him.

Liverpool's perfect Darwin Nunez replacement could be Ricardo Pepi

Against PSV, Liverpool had little to smile about in their final Champions League game despite securing top spot in the league phase.

A much rotated side didn't quite hit the ground running and with a few contentious refereeing decisions and one very blatant one that was probably deserved on Amara Nallo, it ended up being a frustrating night for Liverpool.

But there might a silver lining in this. There was one player who caught the eye with a goal and an assist in Ricardo Pepi.

The USMNT international was someone who was on Liverpool's radar while in Dallas playing in the MLS and has been linked with a move to the Reds recently as well.

On Wednesday night, he showed why he could be the perfect fit. Both clinical and creative against Liverpool, Pepi did a great job linking up with his teammates and also kept his composure in front of goal.

He is averaging a goal or assist every 52 minutes for PSV this season, having already netted 18 goals and has eight goals in his last eight starts for the club in all competitions.

Only 22 years old Pepi is still relatively young and one of the best aspects about him is his defensive play. He's someone who presses from the front and will hunt down opposition defenders, using his tall frame and speed to smother them in possession.

Considering how well Cody Gakpo's transfer has worked out for the Reds, another PSV recruit could be the smart option to replace Nunez.

But Liverpool need to act quickly, Fabrizio Romano has just reported West Ham have bid for Pepi and are interested in his services in what's left of the January window.
