Liverpool got one make-or-break decision absolutely correct.

Liverpool's 2024 is one of the biggest years in the history of the club. Jurgen Klopp stepped down, there was no sporting director and the ownership saw a major shift in who was actually running LFC.

First, Michael Edwards returned as an FSG employee, giving him plenty of control over Liverpool once again. Julian Ward also returned in a similar manner, with the Reds' most successful sporting directors each having a say in how things would run.

Then came a new sporting director: Richard Hughes. Hughes worked with Edwards at Portsmouth over 20 years ago and the pair are long-time friends.

It was, in other words, a natural appointment. But then came the biggest one.

How do you replace Jurgen Klopp? Absolutely no one was sure, with several names in the running as Liverpool did their due diligence.

Eventually, Arne Slot arrived but he was far from the only boss considered. One other was Ruben Amorim, now at Manchester United.

Liverpool rejected the chance to hire him from Sporting CP - a £400m decision.

Liverpool and Ruben Amorim

The Times is adamant that Liverpool did like Amorim. There has, after all, been some speculation that they were never that high on the Portuguese boss.

The real problem, though, was that Liverpool didn't like that Amorim played with three at the back. The Reds' squad under Klopp simply wasn't built for it and making the switch would have cost a lot of money.

Apparently, Liverpool put the cost of switching the squad around at £400m. An enormous figure that suggests mass replacements.

Now, sales would have offset a lot of that but Liverpool instead went with Slot. The feeling there was that he only really needed a couple of additions.

The Reds wanted a new style of holding midfielder, targeting Martin Zubimendi but failing to get him. Slot also wanted a new forward, according to reports, which led to Federico Chiesa arriving.

Chiesa's lack of availability has essentially left Slot with exactly the same squad Slot had, minus Joel Matip and Thiago. Proving Liverpool's point, that hasn't been a problem whatsoever and the Dutchman pushed the squad to the brink of the Premier League title.

We'll never know if Liverpool really needed to spend all that money to get a squad working under Amorim. What we do know, however, is that United have certainly struggled to get their squad to work since hiring him.

In other words, the Reds have been incredibly justified in their decision to avoid Amorim, despite him ranking so highly in their analysis. Not a single Liverpool fan regrets how things went.
