Liverpool's long-term interest in Jamal Musiala as contract talks stall
Liverpool have had Jamal Musiala 'on their list for a long time', according to one report.
The 20-year-old is one of Europe's top young talents and is among the favourites for this year's Golden Boy award – though he is likely to lose out to Jude Bellingham.
Already a regular for the senior Germany side, Musiala has made 133 appearances for Bayern Munich to date, scoring 32 goals.
According to SPORT BILD the Stuttgart-born attacking midfielder, who represented England twice at Under-21 level and spent time with the Chelsea academy is a target for 'top clubs' from England, including Liverpool.
The report claims that the Reds have been looking at Musiala for 'a long time', while adding that contract negotiations between the player and Bayern have stalled.
While Musiala's current contract is not due to expire until 2026, there had been plans to open talks over a new deal back in April, but that has supposedly been shelved.
Once considered the future of Bayern, Musiala has played a reduced role under manager Thomas Tuchel in recent months, often being benched for the veteran Thomas Muller.
SPORT BILD notes that the youngster and his management will now 'wait and see' how things develop in Bavaria before weighing up options for the future. However, the German outlet claims the situation is 'nagging at Musiala'.
As well as Liverpool, Real Madrid are likely to be interested should Bayern's number 42 become available.
Could Liverpool really move for Musiala?
Best suited as a 'number ten' the Reds' need for a player like Musiala is highly questionable, considering the system Jurgen Klopp prefers and the way the club have invested in a midfield overhaul over the summer. He would also not be cheap in terms of transfer fee, or wages.
However, that said, if a player of Musiala's calibre and age did suddenly enter the market, it's feasible Liverpool would, at the very least, assess the situation.
Liverpool landed long-term target Ryan Gravenberch from Bayern Munich on deadline day of the summer transfer window, after the 21-year-old pushed to leave over similar concerns regarding game time.
In addition, changes to the Reds' attacking options and shape may ultimately be required next summer, if this is to be Mohamed Salah's last season at Anfield – as predicted by some.
