Liverpool's 'mentality monsters' are back with incredible comeback stat

Harvey Elliott's stoppage time goal at Selhurst Park sealed another dramatic win for Liverpool on Saturday.

The Reds struggled to create chances for much of the game and fell behind when Jean-Philippe Mateta converted a penalty, awarded after a VAR review, on 57 minutes.

However, Jurgen Klopp's side battled back once again with Mohamed Salah marking his 200th Liverpool goal with the equaliser on 76 minutes before substitute Elliott found the winner which sent the Reds top of the Premier League table for the first time this season.

After the game, Salah hailed his teammates' fighting spirit, adding that he sees 'similarities' with the side that lifted the title back in 2019/20.

He told TNT Sports: “I see the mentality. Just keep fighting until the end. We did it this game, last game and the game before. It’s something positive we can take from that. Of course we have like a new team, six or seven new players in the starting line. We just need to give them our advice.

“They are learning a lot and they are really nice guys. There are similarities from 2019, but of course the other guys achieve a lot and we have to give them credit. But I am sure we can do something special this year.”

That vintage of Jurgen Klopp's Liverpool earned the moniker the 'mentality monsters' for their ability to keep getting results in difficult circumstances – a characteristic shared by this season's squad.

Points from losing positions

The current Reds have won more points (18) after falling behind than another other team in the Premier League in 2023/24 – a testament to their resilience and ability to bounce back.

Liverpool have gone behind nine times in 16 league games this season, yet only suffered one defeat, while picking up a mightily impressive five wins and three draws.

Those comebacks wins have come against: Bournemouth, Newcastle, Wolves, Fulham and Crystal Palace, while the Reds have also earned draws despite conceding first to: Brighton, Luton and Man City.

As further testament to Liverpool's fighting spirit, Opta's Michael Reid revealed after the win over Palace that Elliott's strike means Liverpool have now scored more winning goals after 90 minutes in the Premier League under Jürgen Klopp (17) than Man Utd did under Alex Ferguson (16).

The legendary former Manchester United manager became infamous for his ability to inspire his side to late winners, but it appears that even Fergie can't compete with 'Kloppage Time'.
