So it's confirmed then, Liverpool will play Chelsea in the 2023/24 Carabao Cup final at Wembley on Sunday, 25 February.

Luis Diaz's first-half strike at Craven Cottage was enough to confirm the Reds' passage, with Issa Diop's second-half leveller ultimately counting for little as Liverpool went through 3-2 on aggregate.

The coming fixture against Chelsea will be a repeat of the 2022 final, which the Reds won on penalties after the game finished 0-0 at the end of extra time.

Amazingly, all 20 outfield players scored their spot kicks that day, leaving it to the keepers to decide the fate of the trophy.

The Reds' cup hero Caoimhin Kelleher slotted his penalty away like a seasoned forward, while Chelsea's Kepa Arrizabalaga – who had been subbed on just for the shootout – blazed his effort over the crossbar, confirming Liverpool's record ninth League Cup win.

A repeat of that outcome from two years ago would be greatly appreciated by the Liverpool fans. However, many are not too keen on the prospect of another final with Chelsea.

In addition to the (let's face it) drab showing in the Carabao, the Reds also needed penalties to overcome the Blues after drawing 0-0 in the FA Cup final during the same season.

Liverpool's recent history with the Blues is quite something.

As noted by @DanKennett on X, the Reds have only beaten Chelsea six times in 22 meetings under Jurgen Klopp, while seven of the last ten matches between the two have ended in draws.

In fact, the last time Liverpool beat their Carabao Cup opponents in 90 minutes was back in September 2020, when Sadio Mane scored a second-half double following Andreas Christensen's red card.

To put a more positive spin on it, the Reds have only lost one of their last ten meetings with Chelsea in all competitions.

Going back further, Liverpool also have the historical advantage, winning 84 of the total meetings between the teams, compared to Chelsea's 65 – while 46 contests (all in the last few years it feels like) have ended in draws.

The final on 25 February will also mark the fifth time Liverpool have met Chelsea in an English domestic cup final — the most between any two teams.

The Reds have come out on top twice (both in 2022), while the Blues won the two contests prior to that (2012 FA Cup final and 2005 League Cup final).

Jurgen Klopp vs Mauricio Pochettino

The final will also reunite Klopp with Mauricio Pochettino, who was – of course – in charge of the opposition for the Liverpool boss' first major trophy win at the club.

The now Chelsea manager led out Tottenham for Liverpool's 2-0 Champions League final win in 2019, in possibly a good omen for next month's meeting.

Overall, Pochettino's record against Klopp isn't encouraging reading for Chelsea fans.

The Argentine has won just once against the Reds' manager, while he has lost six and drawn five.

The last time the two met? A draw, of course, on the opening day of the 2023/24 Premier League season.

At least that one had goals, with Luis Diaz scoring for the Reds in a 1-1 at Stamford Bridge last August.
