A few years ago, Stefan Bajcetic was thought of as the next big thing for Liverpool Football Club.

He hadn’t quite put it together but he had all of the traits - some silky footwork, a good eye for a pass, and the backing of Jurgen Klopp.

But 2024/25 has been the season to forget for the young Spaniard - his annus horribilis.

He followed Jurgen Klopp’s assistant Pep Lijnders to Red Bull Salzburg on loan, registering a grand total of zero goal involvements in 19 games in all competitions - despite starting the majority of them.

His last appearance for the club was a 5 minute cameo in a 4-1 drubbing at the hands of Atletico Madrid in the Champions League a couple of weeks ago, a short period after Lijnders himself was sacked.

Liverpool rightly recalled Bajcetic from loan in the January transfer window in order to send him out somewhere else. Somewhere nicer, perhaps, somewhere sunnier, somewhere more familiar where he can reset comfortably and become the player that Reds all around the world would recognise.

And so he made the loan switch to Spanish La Liga side Las Palmas on the island of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. And whilst it isn’t exactly close to his hometown of Vigo in the north-west of Spain, there is still crossover in culture, language and play style that should allow him to be comfortable.

And so it is a true disaster that he was subbed off in just his second appearance for the club with an injury.

Where does Bajcetic's future lie?

The club’s website report the injury as undefined by being somewhere between his knee and calf in his right leg. There is currently no timetable on how much time he will miss - if any - but it is another negative indicator for Bajcetic’s future.

This doesn’t have to be it. This doesn’t have to mean it’s over. But with a failure to break into Liverpool’s first team this season when he had more of an advantage than most - given players such as Rio Ngumoha, Amara Nallo and James McConnell have seen first-team minutes - combined with displaying little to nothing in his loan spells, people would be right to be fearful.

Bajcetic seemed like he could be the defensive midfielder of Liverpool’s dreams at one point. Able to distribute the ball with ease, set the team up to attack and break down the counter-attacks that teams plan specifically when they play against the Reds.

The final Merseyside Derby at Goodison Park will kick-off at 19:30 GMT and will be broadcast live on TNT Sports 1.

But his future now lies uncertain. There is a real possibility that Liverpool decide to cut their losses on him at the end of this season. If so, it would be an amazingly sad end to what was once such a promising talent.
