James McConnell earns promotion

The youngster is very much a part of Liverpool's first team squad these days. He's training regularly with the first team at the AXA training centre and continues to be in the travelling matchday squad.

Despite having offers to loan him out in the January transfer window, Slot opted to keep him in and around the first team because he had impressed the Dutchman.

Given Liverpool look certain to clinch the Premier League title, McConnell may earn more minutes in the first team from now until the end of the season with very little at stake.

However, for now he will be celebrating a huge promotion at international level instead.

McConnell has been called up to the England U20 squad for the first time. This is a landmark moment for the 20-year-old.

Despite being a highly rated prospect for Liverpool and even catching the eye in the Carabao Cup final at Wembley last year, McConnell has never previously represented England at any level.

It will his first opportunity to don the Three Lions shirt in what is a momentous promotion for the young midfielder.

It's also thoroughly deserved, McConnell has made some impressive appearances for the Reds and he's always been a stand-out player for the club's U21 side in the Premier League 2.

Also in the England U20 squad is Trey Nyoni, who is an equally highly rated top-prospect at Anfield. Meanwhile, Premier League stars like Romain Esse and Nico O'Reilly have also made the cut.
