EXCLUSIVE: Liverpool considering approach for Wolves midfielder Matheus Nunes

Liverpool could make an approach for Wolves’ Matheus Nunes as the club assess their options over a midfield rebuild. 

A late move for Moises Caicedo proved fruitless as Chelsea managed to secure the former Brighton player’s services for a British record £115 million, while Romeo Lavia has had his head turned and looks set for a move to Stamford Bridge as well.

The club have liked Nunes as far back as last year when was playing for Sporting CP and now the side are weighing up another approach for the 24-year-old.

We understand that there is a contingent of Wolves players looking for an exit following the departure of Julen Lopetegui, the manager who helped them keep their Premier League status last campaign.

Nunes has registered interest from other clubs as well as Liverpool but personal terms would not be an issue for the Portuguese midfielder.

Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall of Leicester City is also being discussed, as Anfield Watch revealed earlier this month, and is thought to be a possible replacement for Jordan Henderson.

The Reds’ bid of £111m for Caicedo makes no secret of the funds that are in place for this window but it will also be about finding the right players to come in, as their main targets of the window, including Real Madrid’s Jude Bellingham, have either signed for rival clubs or are about to.

Liverpool moved on from Khephren Thuram after believing that his young age and lack of Premier League experience would pose too much of a risk, but given the current landscape, it’s an option they could make once more.

The player verbally agreed on a deal in principle but Liverpool concluded that they were better off looking at other options.

Liverpool are also in need of a boost in defence and among those looked at during the winter period were Goncalo Inacio and Antonio Siva, the latter of whom would cost the release clause of £77m.

Benfica were always expecting to sell Silva this window but proposals have been few and far between, so it’s possible that the amount could be lower.

Meanwhile, we are informed by sources in Portugal that Benfica knocked back a proposal of £25.8m for Florentino Luis already, though which club made the offer is unknown.
