Liverpool winger set to be offered new contract to ward off PSG interest

Reports emerging from Colombia suggest that Liverpool are set to offer Luis Diaz a new contract this summer.

The winger, who arrived at Anfield from Porto in January 2022 for an initial fee of £37 million, has proven to be a pivotal figure since his arrival from the Portuguese Primeira Liga.

With 24 goals and 12 assists in 90 appearances for the Reds, the Colombia international has established himself as a regular starter under boss Jurgen Klopp on the left-hand side of his front three.

Now, according to journalist Pipe Sierra, the Reds are contemplating rewarding the 27-year-old with a new long-term deal.

Modest salary

While Diaz's current contract runs until 2027, the potential renewal reflects the club's desire to acknowledge his rising stature and contribution, particularly given the relatively modest wages he initially received upon joining from Porto.

This move comes amid an impending period of transition for Liverpool when Klopp leaves at the end of the season.

Evidently, the club would like to tie down key players for the long haul to ensure stability when the next manager comes in.

Interest from elsewhere

However, the secondary motive for offering Diaz a new deal will be to shield the club from potential overtures from other clubs, with Paris Saint-Germain reportedly an interested party.

With Kylian Mbappe set to leave the French giants sooner rather than later, the club will need to recruit big to fill the boots of someone of such stature and importance to the squad.

This could, however, lead to Diaz's camp leveraging this interest to secure as big a pay rise as possible. With Liverpool's historic reluctance to pay astronomic wages, Qatari-owned PSG could have a significant advantage in the fight for his signature.

In such a case, it might make more sense to cash in on the Colombian while his value is at its highest as he heads into his peak years.
