As Jurgen Klopp prepares for his final game in charge of Liverpool, the referee appointments for the match against Wolves on Sunday have raised eyebrows among Reds fans.

The choice of officials seems almost tailor-made to stir the pot one last time, with both the main referee and the VAR official having contentious histories with Klopp.

Referee for Liverpool vs Wolves

Chris Kavanagh will be the man in the middle for Sunday's clash at Anfield. He has overseen Liverpool games on 19 occasions, with the Reds losing just three times under his watch.

However, Klopp has not always been impressed with Kavanagh’s performances.

The Liverpool manager notably criticised him after the Carabao final, suggesting that the referee was not up to the level required for such a high-stakes match.

Klopp specifically highlighted Kavanagh’s failure to issue a red card for the dangerous challenge on Ryan Gravenberch by Moises Caicedo, questioning whether the speed of the game was too much for the official.

"I’m not sure if these boys are too quick for them, but this situation, for me, is obvious," Klopp said following the final whistle, with Gravenberch injured during the tackle that saw his ankle twisted in a rather unfortunate way.

Adding to the drama, David Coote will be in charge of VAR over at Stockley Park.

Coote’s history with Liverpool in the VAR room is interesting, to say the least. His decision not to recommend a penalty for Martin Odegaard’s handball in a 1-1 draw against Arsenal back in December remains a sore point.

Even referee chief Howard Webb later admitted that Coote's handling of the incident was a mistake.

Jurgen Klopp's farewell

For Klopp, these appointments must feel like a final test of his patience and resilience. With the game’s outcome having no impact on Liverpool’s guaranteed third-place finish, all eyes will be on how these officials handle the match and whether any contentious decisions will mar the German's Anfield farewell.

Assistant referees Simon Bennett and Dan Robathan, fourth official Anthony Backhouse, and VAR assistant Scott Ledger round out the officiating team.

Liverpool fans will be hoping that the focus remains on celebrating Klopp’s incredible tenure rather than on any officiating controversies.

Sunday promises to be an emotional day for Reds fans, and while the outcome on the pitch may be a formality, the presence of Kavanagh and Coote ensures that Klopp’s final game won’t be short of intrigue.
