Liverpool vs Man United: Dominik Szoboszlai’s mystery absence explained

Dominik Szoboszlai has been omitted from Arne Slot's squad against Manchester United this afternoon.

The Liverpool midfielder was expected to start the game, however he will not be involved at Anfield on Sunday.

After missing the Reds' victory over West Ham United due to suspension Szoboszlai will now miss the game against the Reds' arch rivals with Curtis Jones coming in to replace him.

It will be a blow to Slot, with the no.8 a key player and key part of Liverpool's success. However, Jones is more than a competent replacement.

Why is Dominik Szoboszlai not involved against Man United?

The reason for the Hungarian's absence is that he has been struck by an illness over the past couple of days and he has therefore been told to rest by the club's medical staff and is unable to take to the pitch.

It's a frustrating one for Szoboszlai, who will have been raring to go for this one and he will be bitterly disappointed to be out of action.

However, a bit of respite for the midfielder could come in handy considering Liverpool have a very busy period coming up and having him fresh will be a huge boost to Slot in the long run.

In terms of the line-up against Manchester United, Liverpool have still fielded a strong team and while Szoboszlai will be missed, Slot's men have plenty of ammunition to get the job done over a struggling Man United side.

And if they do get the job done, it will be a huge advantage for Liverpool in the title race after Arsenal and Chelsea both slipped up on Saturday.
