Liverpool vs Arsenal - Predictions
Liverpool face a gargantuan clash with Arsenal in the Premier League on Saturday, the Reds looking to reclaim their place at the top of the table.
A drab draw with Manchester United last Sunday saw the Gunners leapfrog Liverpool in the league, but Jurgen Klopp's side can return to the summit with a victory this weekend.
The 5-1 demolition of West Ham United in the Carabao Cup midweek will have offered a confidence boost to the Liverpool players prior to Arsenal's visit, the Reds embarking on a third successive home game.
However, Arsenal have won seven of their last nine matches in all competitions and boast a fairly clean bill of health ahead of their trip to Anfield.
With so much on the line, Saturday promises to be a nerve-wracking affair. Here is how Anfield Watch's writers think things might play out.
Arjun Subramanian: Taking into account Jurgen Klopp’s rallying to the Anfield faithful and the fine margins at the top of the table, there’s no chance this game is going to be a snooze-fest like the one against Manchester United last weekend.
Arsenal haven’t won at Anfield since September 2012, expect that trend to continue.
Liverpool 2-2 Arsenal
Sam McGuire: For the first time in a while, Liverpool looked back to their ruthless best in the 5-1 win over West Ham United. However, the result has probably given Jurgen Klopp a bit of a selection headache.
Does he start Darwin on the left? What does he do with Trent? These questions aren't the sort you want to be answering as you host the leaders with the chance to go top at Christmas. Yet here we are.
Arsenal have looked assured and composed for the most part this season and I do think they've learnt from their mistakes of yesteryear. I don't expect another implosion at Anfield but I am intrigued to see how they react to going a goal down to the Reds.
If Liverpool strike early, it could be a real test for them. I'm predicting a draw though.
Liverpool 2-2 Arsenal
Ewan Ross-Murray: I think Liverpool will rise to the occasion, spurred on by the disappointment of last weekend's clash with Manchester United.
The Reds were electric against West Ham on Wednesday evening and if they display similar energy and athleticism against Arsenal then they could get real joy.
The Gunners have often struggled at Anfield, even failing to capitalise on a two-goal lead last season. Arsenal's more offensive approach may actually suit Liverpool and I'm expecting an outpouring of emotion from the Anfield crowd after Klopp's telling-off.
I think it'll be nervy, but hopefully we'll receive an early Christmas present on Saturday.
