Van Dijk reveals what Szoboszlai told him during Adam Szalai's medical emergency
Speaking to the media following the match Van Dijk shared that the situation was distressing for players on both sides of the pitch.
“It was a shock, of course. You see someone lying down and shaking. Then it's a bit scary, to be honest” the Dutch captain said, via FC Update.
"I asked [Szoboszlai] if Szalai had been through this before. That turned out to be the case. Very scary to see, but I hope he is doing well and that he can recover. He had been through it before, Szoboszlai said. It's horrible, but hopefully he'll recover well from it. That's the most important thing.
"The players of Hungary had to make the decision whether they wanted to continue playing. We were waiting for their decision. I think it shows a lot of strength that they wanted to continue playing. Great respect for that."
The latest on Adam Szalai
After being hospitalised immediately after the medical emergency on Saturday, reports from Hungary have now revealed that Szalai has been released from hospital.
According to Nemzeti Sport, Szalai was released from hospital on Saturday night and will travel back to Hungary with the rest of the national team.
The coach reportedly spent the night in the team hotel after a short stay in the hospital after receiving some treatment from the national team’s medical staff whilst still at the ground.
Liverpool players Szoboszlai, Van Dijk, Ryan Gravenberch and Cody Gakpo were all involved in the match and will be relieved to hear that Szalai appears to be recovering well.
The Reds will now be due to head back to Merseyside to begin preparations for their next match against Southampton on 24 November.
