Liverpool transfers: Reds back in for TWO defenders

The transfer window has only just closed, but Liverpool may already be on the hunt to bolster their defensive line.

That might seem surprising, given that the Reds have won their opening three matches of the Premier League season, without conceding a single goal, to sit joint top of the table.

But key centre-back Virgil van Dijk, who made his 200th Premier League appearance in the 3-0 win at Manchester United, is out of contract at the end of the season.

It remains unclear whether his deal will be extended to remain with the club, given that the Dutchman is now 33 years old.

The Reds were linked with several defenders during the summer, and reports are now suggesting that boss Arne Slot is continuing a pursuit of two of them.

Juve star in Reds' sights

The first is Juventus defender Gleison Bremer. Liverpool were said to be chasing the Brazilian international this summer, with reports that he would cost more than the £36m that it took to lure Ibrahima Konate from RB Leipzig in 2021.

The 27-year-old is under contract until 2028, but has a release clause that activates next summer.

Spanish publication Fichajes are reporting that Bremer has been identified as the ideal candidate to replace Van Dijk, and are seriously considering signing the Juventus man in 2025.

The Brazilian has the experience of playing for a big club, and can both recover and bring the ball out from the back, making him well suited to Slot’s style of play.

The second player linked, also by Fichajes, is Goncalo Inacio, of Portuguese side Sporting.

Sources told Anfield Watch several months ago that Liverpool had sounded out Inacio’s representatives over the possibility of a move this summer.

The 23-year-old is a highly-rated Portugal international, who started his country’s Nations League win over Croatia this week, following Pepe’s retirement from international duty.

Liverpool’s recruitment team have liked Inacio for some time, and a buyout clause of around £51.5m was set when he last extended his contract at Sporting, to 2027.

Reports are suggesting that the Reds remain interested, although they could face competition from Newcastle United.
