David Coote has been at the centre of a recent controversy after footage emerged allegedly showing him disparaging Liverpool and Jurgen Klopp.

The video, which has been recirculated massively online, allegedly shows Coote and another man and it appears Coote describes Liverpool as ‘s***’, he also calls Jurgen Klopp a ‘German c***’ before the second man in the video declares ‘we hate scousers’.

The authenticity of the video hasn’t yet been confirmed but Coote has been suspended by the Premier League and is under investigation by both the FA and the PGMOL, the body that is responsible for the refereeing of matches in England.

Coote has been involved in a number of high-profile incidents involving Liverpool in the past and this has added fuel to the fire.

A second video is also circulating that looks to have been taken immediately after the first and appears to show Coote urging the person taking the video that his comments on Klopp and Liverpool must not be posted anywhere.

UEFA suspends Coote

Now UEFA has also taken the decision to suspend Coote, who officiated at the European Championship earlier this year.

In an official statement, the body said: “The UEFA Referees Committee immediately suspended David Coote until further notice on November 11 - in advance of the upcoming round of UEFA matches - when it became aware of his inappropriate behaviour.”

This means that Coote will not be involved in any refereeing for the foreseeable future, at least until the PGMOL and FA investigations have concluded.

Liverpool FC are aware of the matter but are declining to comment whilst the investigations are ongoing.

Coote was the referee in Liverpool’s most recent match, a 2-0 victory over Aston Villa at Anfield in the Premier League.

Until the investigations have concluded, it is unclear what result could come at the end of them, and it is also unclear whether this incident could have any long-lasting repercussions for Liverpool or the PGMOL.

Most Liverpool supporters will have been shocked by these recent developments, but the situation is ongoing and the investigations into Coote are likely to continue for a while.
