Trent Alexander-Arnold wasn’t at his best during the weekend’s Premier League win against Bournemouth.

The 26-year-old slipped up as early as the opening seconds at the Vitality Stadium and it didn’t get much better throughout the contest.

Time and again, Trent was tested by Antoine Semenyo and Justin Kluivert, with Liverpool lucky not to concede due to the chances given away down their right-hand side.

He wasn’t having much luck with the ball either and the England international’s afternoon reached a premature end when he was substituted in the second half due to injury.

Happily, it doesn’t appear Alexander-Arnold will be out for the long term and Arne Slot will have him back sooner rather than later.

Analysing the game for ESPN FC, Liverpool legend Steve Nicol showed Trent no mercy, accusing the defender of being unable to do his job properly.

Nicol, 63, won four league titles during his playing days at Anfield as well as the European Cup.

Nicol on Trent 'propaganda'

"That whole propaganda that we were listening to at the start of the season about how he's defending better - I mean that's all it was. Propaganda,” he said.

“He was so bad and actually I think he probably would have been taken off had he not picked up a knock. He was that bad defensively.

"I don't think it's lack of effort. He's just a fish out of water. He just doesn't know what to do.

“He's had the Konates, the Matips and the Van Dijks of this world to cover it up, and because generally, certainly over the last four or five years, they've had more of the ball than the opposition and so you can get away with it.

“But when he's isolated, oh my! You just got to shut your eyes."

Alexander-Arnold is under scrutiny while playing perhaps his final matches for the Reds. He is under contract until summer 2025 and is being heavily courted by Real Madrid.
