However, no breakthrough has been made as of yet, and while the English media remains defiant that discussions are still ongoing with Liverpool, the Spanish media is incessant that he will join Real Madrid and that the move is all but missing the final touches.

As such Liverpool fans are beyond stressed with the situation that is unfortunately unfolding while the club is in the midst of a title charge under Arne Slot. At a time when the focus needs to be firmly on footballing matters on the pitch, an enormous distraction is overshadowing the team.

The Spanish perspective on Trent's situation

The latest report from AS claims that the signing is 90% done, with Trent having one foot already in Real Madrid and eyeing up the possibility of reuniting with his fellow England teammate Jude Bellingham.

Madrid's interest in the Scouse right-back is predominantly because of Dani Carvajal's age, at 32 years old, and his current ACL injury which is keeping him sidelined for the remainder of the season.

When an injury of such significance happens to a player, the likelihood that they can return to their former performance levels is incredibly low - one of the very few examples of players who have managed to defy the odds is Liverpool's own Virgil Van Dijk.

As such, Los Blancos are in need of a right-back and as a result of Liverpool's negligence over the past few years regarding Trent's contract, one of the best players in the world is about the be placed on the market.

From January 1st, clubs around the world can begin to speak to Alexander-Arnold about penning a pre-agreement while he sees out the remainder of his time on Merseyside.

For AS, the only reason why the right-back cannot yet be considered a Real Madrid player is because the signature on an agreement is missing as a result of the deadline.

The winter transfer window also opens on the same date, which itself is a possible avenue for Trent to look at, although it has importantly clarified that a move to Real Madrid will only take place in the summer.

The latest report reads: "The winter route is ruled out by both parties. Trent was born in Liverpool, grew up in Liverpool and has only played for Liverpool. There he is an idol."

As a mark of respect, if nothing else, it seems as though the club will be able to rely on his services for the remainder of the season, although those circumstances could themselves lead to a number of problems as fans would have to watch Trent wearing the shirt, knowing that he has decided to leave.

Although at least the Reds will have plenty of time to prepare for the upcoming season without him at the club, so there is a small positive to take.
