Liverpool find themselves in a situation that could derail their season.

Mohamed Salah, Virgil Van Dijk and Trent Alexander-Arnold are all set to be out of contract at the end of the season and the ongoing negotiations to extend their stay could pose a distraction from on-field matters.

All of the players and the club's executives are under the microscope amid uncertainty surrounding the futures of the club's biggest stars and any sign of a player acting out is set to create headlines.

Trent's below-par performance in defence against Manchester United a few weeks ago led many fans to believe his head was already focused on a potential move to Real Madrid and claims that he cannot defend circulated once again, despite his largely impressive season so far.

As such, Real Madrid - who are looking the favourites to sign Trent at the end of the season - are taking all the relevant precautions to ensure that their season isn't derailed in the process.

Madrid players cannot answer questions about Trent

According to Defensa Central, a Real Madrid-focused website, the players are being briefed about how to deal with the increase in media attention as the season begins its second phase.

Their latest report denotes the procedure being adopted: "The return of the Champions League to the competitive calendar means the reappearance of flash interviews and much longer press conferences with more questions and the intervention of international media."

In addition, "his [Trent's] signing will not be official until five months from now", a clear indication that speculation around the right-back will not be coming to an end with a move in the January transfer window.

As such, a clear strategy has been devised. "The subject must be changed whenever this matter is discussed."

The reasons for such an approach are concerning not wanting to engage in speculation which has not been confirmed by the club and subsequently risk distracting the players' attention, because "the inconsistent performance offered by the white club this season has slightly heated up the spirits of the board" and in order to not risk breaking the "excellent institutional relations" with Liverpool.

As such, his name is to be off limits, which will hopefully limit the amount of speculation surrounding his future and in turn, allow Liverpool to focus on the job at hand in winning the Premier League.

Neither team will want outside noise to impact their football and while the Reds' executives continue to work tirelessly to agree an extension to Trent's deal, Real Madrid will be working in the background to make the deal as seamless as possible.

If the approach is successful, then Liverpool fans will be left in the dark about his decision until it is confirmed by the club or mainstream media reports, which could either add a level of calmness to the ongoing discussions about the team or increase nerves and speculation about Trent's performances.

Either way, given how stressful the situation has been for everyone involved so far, tensions may just be allowed to settle for the time being.
