Trent Alexander-Arnold is owed a MASSIVE APOLOGY that we all know he won't get

Trent Alexander-Arnold proves a point magnificently as Liverpool beat Brighton 2-1 in the Premier League. The Scouser was on fire - but in a different kind of way.

Trent Alexander-Arnold has a reputation for not being able to defend. He holds that reputation despite coming up against some of the greatest wingers we've ever seen and getting the better of him.

The old myth goes 'you can't use him at right-back because the first time he comes up against an elite winger, he'll cost you the game'. That's repeated - and has been for years - despite all the evidence of it being false.

But then, maybe the issue is consistency. Yes, Alexander-Arnold can defend in one-off games but ask him to do it repeatedly and a mistake has to happen.

Only, he's just proven that's not the case. And he's done it emphatically.

Alexander-Arnold makes his point

We wrote in the runup to Liverpool vs Brighton that Alexander-Arnold could make a serious point in the fixture. He had the chance to prove he's a complete defender and one worthy of the contract he quite plainly believes he deserves.

The Scouser kept Chelsea at bay. Then he did the same against an Arsenal side desperately trying to make a title claim.

Here was another test, coming up against Kaoru Mitoma - exactly the kind of winger that people expect to trouble him. But Alexander-Arnold was virtually perfect, stopping his man again and again.

In all, he won nine tackles against Brighton (per Whoscored). That was the best figure in the match and anyone watching could see the right-back was as solid as a rock.

That's now three games, back-to-back, in the Premier League where Alexander-Arnold has been solid and made an impact. We know, though, that the second he makes a mistake down the line, that'll all be forgotten about and the knives will be back out.

The vice-captain actually deserves an apology for the slander that's gone his way, for all the accusations that he can't do his job, that he's a liability. It's one he'll never get, of course.

But Liverpool fans know for sure that Alexander-Arnold is a winner - with or without the ball.
