Liverpool are facing a potential headache ahead of the January transfer window, and not one related to the contracts of Mohamed Salah, Virgil van Dijk and Trent Alexander-Arnold.

Instead, Arne Slot and Richard Hughes look like they have a huge decision to make which could make or break their hunt for trophies in the new year.

Slot has relied on Ryan Gravenberch at the base of midfield in nearly every game so far this season. Liverpool tried and famously failed to bring Martin Zubimendi to the club during the summer, and have been relying on Wataru Endo and Tyler Morton as the backup options.

Both Endo and Morton have had limited minutes, and now both of them have been linked with a move away from Anfield in January. Slot needs to decide which one to let go as moves for both should be ruled out unless Liverpool find a way to convince Zubimendi, or another midfielder, to join in January.

Fulham linked with Wataru Endo

Endo has mainly played from the bench for Liverpool this season, coming on in games that need a sure hand to tighten up the midfield and secure a win.

The Japanese national team captain is somewhat of a favourite with Liverpool fans for his commitment and consistency, but isn’t suited to Slot’s style of play.

Fulham have been having a brilliant season under Marco Silva and are still seeking a top class replacement for João Palhinha. According to the Daily Mail, Endo has been “touted” as a possibility, especially with other midfielders expected to leave the club.

Losing Endo at this stage of the season would be a blow for Liverpool as he is an important squad player who can also step in at centre back if needed, which could be important with Joe Gomez’s latest injury.

Sheffield United want Tyler Morton

Morton’s only appearances for Liverpool this season have come in the Carabao Cup. With that competition now at the semi-final stage, it’s likely that his only remaining minutes in red this season will come in the FA Cup.

It means a move away in January would make sense for a player who has already impressed in the Championship during multiple loan spells.

And now Sheffield United want to bring him back to that level for the remainder of this season, according to Football League World.

The Championship side have recently been subject to a takeover from an American consortium that are reportedly looking to invest as they attempt to return to the Premier League at the first time of asking.

So, who should Liverpool let go? At Anfield Watch, we would be more comfortable with a move away for Morton this season. Slot’s side are in such a good position in the league and cup competitions that he can’t afford to gut the squad for short-term monetary gain.

Ideally both would stay to ensure maximum depth, but there is merit to loaning Morton out once again to boost his transfer value ahead of the summer window.
