Liverpool are facing the prospect of losing three of their most important players at the end of this season.

Trent Alexander-Arnold, Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk are all out of contract in summer 2025 and so far there has been no breakthrough in negotiations over a new deal for any of them.

Fans are fearful that Trent has got one foot out of the door with Real Madrid interested and no signals from the right-back that he will pledge his future to the Reds.

Salah is known to be keen to remain at Anfield but the club and their most famous player appear to be far apart over his next contract. To have Salah running down his deal despite an apparent desire to remain on Merseyside looks bad for Fenway Sports Group and sporting director Richard Hughes.

Add in the radio silence over Van Dijk and you can see why concern is compounding.

Anfield Watch revealed a couple of months ago that the 33-year-old was intending to stay with Liverpool beyond the terms of his current deal. However, since that news, a new contract remains unsigned.

The January 1 deadline might be more for media and fans than it is for clubs and players but the fact of the matter is Liverpool are now in competition with every other club interested in enlisting Salah, Alexander-Arnold and Van Dijk.

Heading into the new year - when all three would be free to negotiate pre-contract agreements with potentially interested overseas clubs - supporters were hopeful that progress would soon be made.

Van Dijk doesn't expect contract progress

Since Liverpool played their final game of 2024 West Ham, however, we have seen Trent in Venice, Salah has again reiterated that it’s his final season at the club and now Virgil van Dijk has sounded yet another alarm.

After the draw against Manchester United on Sunday, Van Dijk was again asked about his contract situation. In an ideal world, he would have it already signed, sealed and delivered. In the second most optimistic scenario, he might have reassured us that there’s nothing to worry about.

Instead we got this in front of the Sky Sports cameras when asked if he had any contract updates.

“Nothing.”

Pressed if he expected news any time soon, the situation got even more dismal. “I don't think so but I'm calm about it. Like I said months ago, we will see what happens in the future.

“At this point I've got absolutely no updates and it's all about focusing at the moment for me and for the team on Spurs.

“It will be a tough game again but a good semi-final.”

What is going on? Who is in control? How are three of Liverpool’s best players in this position? And if Van Dijk has no updates on this situation then why not?

Something has got to give soon. We have gone from a situation where a renewal looked all but a formality to “absolutely no updates” and the season careening to a close.

Hughes and FSG better hope there is progress soon or else this whole sorry scenario will overshadow what has been a dream first season on the pitch for Arne Slot.
