Liverpool are yet to make a formal contract offer to captain Virgil van Dijk despite the Dutchman’s current expiring in less than a year.

Van Dijk, 33, has been at Anfield since 2018, earning top honours in the Champions League, the Premier League, the Club World Cup and other competitions, but time appears to be running out on his Liverpool stay.

There have been NO recent developments on contract talks between Van Dijk and the club with the centre back revealing ahead of the European Championship that discussions at this stage wouldn’t make sense.

Liverpool played against Sevilla in Arne Slot’s first Anfield outing on Sunday, winning 4-1 in a game that sawn Van Dijk feature for 74 minutes.

Following the game, the ex-Celtic man was again asked whether there had been any progress on a new contract.

According to Paul Joyce in The Times, Van Dijk appeared to be visibly exasperated at being asked the question yet again, groaning before replying: “There are no changes at the moment.”

Van Dijk, Salah and Trent contracts

New sporting director Richard Hughes and FSG’s CEO of Football Michael Edwards have got a lot on their plate with Van Dijk, Mohamed Salah and Trent Alexander-Arnold all out of contract at the end of this season.

All three have been allowed to lapse into the final year of their deals, putting pressure on Liverpool’s new hierarchy and the FSG ownership to sort out the future of three of their most important players.

The club usually offers deals of only 12 months to players of Van Dijk’s age with the player free to speak to other clubs about a Bosman in January

Van Dijk wants signings

Not only are there three high-profile contracts to arrange, there are also incoming transfers to plan for with Liverpool yet to sign a single player ahead of the Premier League kickoff next weekend.

The Reds are chasing a deal for Martin Zubimendi of Real Sociedad but that is proving to be a difficult deal to get done.

Zubimendi is thought to be mulling over a new contract offer at the Anoeta Stadium while Liverpool will have to pay €60 million in one lump sum in order to get a deal over the line.

Despite that complication - and a failed chase for Manchester United defender Leny Yoro - Van Dijk has URGED the club to get some players in the door before the current transfer window closes.

“I am positive. I am confident,” he said

“Obviously, I think we should make some signings based on how long the season will go but I think they are working behind the scenes and I am fully convinced, and trust the club, that they will do the right thing for us and get the best possible squad in order to compete in every competition that we are in.”
