Atalanta midfielder Teun Koopmeiners left the door wide open when asked about his future on Wednesday. Liverpool are after the player.

Teun Koopmeiners was asked for comments on his future after the UEFA Europa League final on Wednesday. The midfielder helped Atalanta to a historic win over Bayer Leverkusen - an emphatic 3-0 on the night.

Koopmeiners has been the subject of mass speculation around his future throughout the season. He certainly didn't curtail it with his answer post-match.

“I’m only happy to enjoy this title with the fans, I’m focused on celebrating," he told Sky Italia, as relayed by Fabrizio Romano. “Next season? I don’t know. We will see."

Now, it's worth mentioning that this is actually Koopmeiners being a little more coy than he's previously been.

“I told Atalanta I want to leave in the summer,” Koopmeiners told De Telegraaf in March.

“Last season, there was concrete interest from Napoli, but the two clubs didn’t reach an agreement. I hope there will be options to consider this year. My girlfriend and I are enjoying Italy, but I would endure rain for some clubs in England!"

And there's an English club with interest...

Liverpool like Teun Koopmeiners

Reports in Italy have consistently put Liverpool in the mix for Koopmeiners this year. Most recently, it was claimed that the Reds were in the ideal place to sign the Dutchman because Juventus couldn't afford the asking price.

But really, there have been links dating back since before Koopmeiners joined Atalanta. That was back when Koopmeiners was at AZ Alkmaar and playing under... Arne Slot.

So you can expect the links to increase now the season is done and Slot is confirmed as the next Liverpool manager. You might also see an increase in Koopmeiners' desire to join Liverpool.

After all, he now has a very solid and interesting connection waiting for him at Anfield.
