Liverpool transfers: €20m-rated Sepp van den Berg wants PSV move

Liverpool will have to lower their price for wantaway defender Sepp van den Berg if he is to get a move to PSV this summer.

That’s according to Eindhovens Dagblad, which reveals that Liverpool’s current valuation of €20 million is too steep for the Dutch champions.

However, the paper goes on to report that if the Reds reduced the fee to around €15m then a deal could be possible.

"PSV will also try to complete the transfer of Sepp van den Berg (Liverpool) quickly," the report says.

"He would like to come to Eindhoven and that is not the stumbling block now. Van den Berg and PSV will reach an agreement, but Liverpool wants an enormous price.

"If the British stick to €20m, it will probably be very complicated for PSV to do business. If five million or more is deducted from the price, then it will probably be possible."

Van den Berg, 22, spent last season on loan at Mainz in the Bundesliga and following their miracle escape from relegation the Germans would also like to add the Dutch stopper to their squad on a permanent basis.

However, Mainz have been frustrated at being unable to push negotiations along with Liverpool and Van den Berg himself is annoyed that his career is being held back.

“They haven't radiated confidence in me all this time, but they do want to hinder my future," he told De Telegraaf earlier this summer. "I want to keep playing weekly and develop myself further.”

Van den Berg fails to make breakthrough

Other teams like Southampton, Brentford and Wolfsburg are all reported to be monitoring Van den Berg, who is under contract at Anfield until 2026.

He joined Liverpool as a 17-year-old in 2019 from PEC Zwolle, where new Liverpool boss Arne Slot was previously a coach.

However, he has been unable to make a breakthrough at Anfield during his senior career.

He went out on loan to both Schalke and Preston North End before finally finding a place where he could excel with Mainz.

Last season he played 35 matches for Mainz, scoring three goals.

Liverpool summer priorities elsewhere

Sporting director Richard Hughes has plenty on his plate this summer with contract resolutions being sought for Trent Alexander-Arnold, Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk. All three are out of contract in 2025.

Also in the in-tray are incomings with Leny Yoro one player on the Anfield wishlist.
