The jury is very much out on Richard Hughes at the moment but the Liverpool sporting director could redeem himself with an insane transfer.

Hughes' track record has been poor at Liverpool to say the least. His only acquisition of the summer window who actually joined the Reds this summer has struggled to keep himself fit.

Federico Chiesa has already been labelled as a flop, although that is unfair given he's hardly played and he should be given time to acclimatise at Anfield.

Nonetheless, with Liverpool still struggling to tie down Mohamed Salah, Virgil van Dijk and Trent Alexander-Arnold to new deals and Martin Zubimendi snubbing the Reds last summer - Hughes definitely needs to find a way to change his perception around the club.

And there's one insane transfer that could help him do the trick.

Why Liverpool have a golden chance to pull off Kobbie Mainoo deal

David Ornstein writing in The Athletic has reported that Manchester United have put one of their biggest talents up for sale in Kobbie Mainoo.

Liverpool's rivals need to raise funds to keep up with the Premier League's Profit and Sustainability rules and this means they are now open to selling the England international.

The report states that United will only sell at the right price. However, with the need to comply with financial rules the club's hands might be forced and that is when Liverpool could swoop in.

There hasn't been a transfer at the men's senior level between the two clubs in 61 years. The last male player to move from Old Trafford to Anfield was Phil Chisnall back in 1964.

It's pretty much unheard of that a player moves from United to Liverpool and vice versa.

Some notable players in recent memory who have played for both clubs are Michael Owen and Paul Ince - but neither moved directly from one club to the other.

However, given Mainoo's talent, Liverpool should try to test United's resolve and break that long-standing legacy.

It would be an insane deal to pull off for Richard Hughes, but Mainoo is a really exciting prospect who could flourish at Anfield.

He's the type of player Liverpool could use and with United opening up the possibility of a sale this is a golden chance Hughes simply should not pass up on.
