Why Rayan Cherki is available for a BARGAIN fee

With the position Liverpool find themselves in heading into the January transfer window, the board may want to act smart and pounce on the team's fantastic run so far this season.

The Reds sit top of the Premier League and Champions League heading into the new year and fans couldn’t have dreamed for a better start.

The players have really stepped up under the tuition of Arne Slot, but need to make that extra push if they want to secure silverware this season.

One player who could contribute to this push is Rayan Cherki, whose club is currently in a freefall experiencing strong money issues.

Lyon's financial woes

Lyon have had a steady campaign so far in Ligue 1 currently sitting 5th and looking good for the play-offs in the Europa League where they find themselves in 4th position.

But Les Gones' fans will be looking over their shoulders with their team also dealing with a perilous situation which could see a huge number of their key stars leaving the club.

It was announced in November that Lyon will be demoted to Ligue 2 at the end of the season if they do not improve their finances.

They are also banned from signing players in January too.

BBC Sport reported that Lyon will therefore have to sell ‘several of their key players in January’ to get their accounts in order and secure top-flight status.

With the Reds sporting director Richard Hughes discussing the club making “opportunistic signings” and the right player being available at the right time and price, Cherki could be that anomaly.

Reds cash in on Cherki?

The midfielder is having a phenomenal season with Lyon, scoring five goals and providing 7 assists in all competitions so far.

Still only being 21-years-old, the young Frenchman has the ability to play in three positions from attacking midfielder, to the two winger slots.

He has been singled out for his high pressing, exquisite playmaking and passing; a man of all trades clearly full of hunger and energy.

And the young star would be available for a fraction of what he’s worth.

With Lyon’s troubles, they will be looking to offload copious amounts of players, with other teams recognising they are desperate to sell.

Liverpool are set to go head-to-head with Paris Saint-Germain for his signature which is looking to be in the region of €30 million; an absolute steal.

But this signing seems like the epitome of a ‘Liverpool transfer’. An incredible talent looking to be offloaded for a smaller fee to what he is actually worth.

FSG will want to incorporate a ‘Moneyball’ approach in this case, signing a player from the clutches of other European opponents, but also to develop and grow in a transitioning Liverpool team.

It would be a smart signing from the Reds, but the unpredictability in the transfer market from the board could make this saga long and strenuous.
