Liverpool have started the season excellently under new head coach Arne Slot, but there has been as much attention on their off-pitch situation as their on-pitch success.

The Reds currently sit top of the Premier League, thanks to a stunning winner from Mohamed Salah in their last league game against Brighton.

Although the Egyptian King has been in red-hot form since Slot arrived at Anfield, he is into the last year of his contract and, as things currently stand, he will be available on a free transfer next summer.

There has been a lot of speculation surrounding Salah’s future, fuelled by cryptic posts from him and his agent as well as his own post-match comments, but now a Saudi Arabian side have identified the Egyptian forward as their top target.

Al-Hilal’s current situation

Al-Hilal are the dominant force in Saudi football and boast in their ranks expensive overseas players such as Aleksandar Mitrovic, Ruben Neves, Kalidou Koulibaly, Joao Cancelo, Malcom and Sergej Milinkovic-Savic.

Their biggest name however is undoubtedly Neymar, who signed from Paris Saint-Germain in 2023 for a fee of around £86m.

The 32-year-old is also reported to command an annual salary of £130m but his time in Saudi Arabia has proven to be a nightmare thus far.

He had played only FIVE matches for his new club before suffering an ACL injury on international duty for Brazil in October 2023. It kept him out for very close to a year, making his return to the pitch two weeks ago, but things have already taken another downward turn.

Neymar’s misfortunes in Saudi Arabia

Neymar came off the bench for Al-Hilal’s AFC Asian Champions League Elite group stage match against Esteghlal on Monday but lasted only 30 minutes before having to be replaced.

He posted on Instagram after the game suggesting that it was only a case of severe cramp but it’s unlikely that the all-time Brazil top goalscorer will ever regain the form that made him a fearsome member of Barcelona’s much-vaunted MSN strike force.

With a contract that expires in the summer of 2025, Al-Hilal will probably cut their losses on Neymar rather than agreeing to the one-year option in his deal.

That would leave an injury-hit Neymar free to find a new club, rumoured to be hometown side Santos in the Brazilian league or else Inter Miami alongside Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez.

And Al-Hilal are reported to have Salah in their sights, according to Ben Jacobs, with the Egyptian tailor-made to take Neymar’s No.10 shirt and lead their charge at the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup.
