Despite Liverpool’s fantastic start to the season, speculation about the future of three of their biggest stars is still rife.

The Reds are top of both the Premier League and UEFA Champions League tables and Arne Slot has won a record 14 of his opening 16 games.

The one thing overshadowing this truly impressive start to the campaign is the contract situations of Mohamed Salah, Virgil van Dijk and Trent Alexander-Arnold.

The trio are all out of contract in June and, as things stand, will all be available for free transfers next summer.

A recent development in Saudi Arabia however may have just offered Liverpool a lifeline with one of their stars.

Cristiano Ronaldo wanted by Al-Hilal

Since before he entered the final year of his contract, it has long been speculated that Mo Salah would make the move to the Saudi Pro League when he departed Anfield.

The team most talked about was Al-Ittihad but a recent report revealed that it is now Al-Hilal who are after the Egyptian’s signature, to replace the struggling Neymar.

Now, a report from SPORT is claiming that Cristiano Ronaldo is also on Al-Hilal’s list.

The report claims that Al-Hilal, who currently lead the Saudi Pro League, are 'dreaming' of the arrival of Ronaldo, but it does also warn that he is not the only player they are looking at.

What could this mean for Salah?

If Ronaldo were to make the move from his current side, Al-Nassr, to Al-Hilal to replace Neymar, it seems unlikely that Salah would also make the switch.

The experiences of both Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mane will also be a lesson for Salah to learn from, and if Ronaldo is Al-Hilal’s number one target it could push Salah towards remaining at Anfield.

Recent reports have suggested that the Egyptian’s priority is to extend his Liverpool contract, but the Reds would not be able to offer the same wages that Al-Hilal can.

If Al-Hilal no longer needed Salah, then this problem is eliminated, and the Egyptian King could move a step closer to extending his time in Merseyside.
