Liverpool fans are just starting to recognise Milos Kerkez's name.

His two assists against Manchester City not only helped the Reds ascend to the top of the Premier League, but it announced him as the club's first choice left-back target.

With Andy Robertson's waning powers, Liverpool need a fresh new, energetic and robust figure to freshen up the left-flank.

The Hungarian full-back is exactly that. I know that for certain. I've known about him since he was 15 years old.

Back then, he was just a kid at ETO FC Győr in Hungary's second tier, running around the pitch, hardly being able to understand instructions in Hungarian, having grown up in Serbia and Austria.

But he didn't need to speak the language. His words were on the pitch and he was remarkable.

As a 16 year old, Kerkez annihilated the competition in Hungary's second tier. Even at that age, he was just way too good for that level and few teenagers are capable of that.

That's why arguably one of the greatest defenders of all time, Paolo Maldini, came calling to lure him to AC Milan.

Why Milos Kerkez will be special at Liverpool

What happened at Milan will go down as the Italian giants' biggest regret. Letting Kerkez slip through the cracks after scoring a brace as a 17 year old in a pre-season game for the club's first team is one that cannot be explained with logic.

Milan's loss was AZ Alkmaar's gain, and ultimately Bournemouth's. But even back then, Liverpool were keeping tabs on the youngster.

In fact he first caught the attention of club scouts when he played a UEFA Youth League game against the Reds, while he was at AC Milan.

But back in 2023, Milos wanted to take his career step by step, moving to Anfield that summer would have been too soon, even if the Reds did come calling.

Bournemouth was the right choice and time has proven so.

He's developed an ample amount working under Andoni Iraola and has established himself as one of the best young talents in the league.

Kerkez's numbers speak for themselves.

He's been brilliant at winning the ball back this season making 43 recoveries - which ranks him among the top five full-backs in the Premier League as per FBref.

As per Wyscout he ranks among the top five left-backs in the league for defensive duel success rate (59.09 per cent) above Rayan Ait-Nouri (56.79 per cent).

He's very much an all action defender. No one has attempted more slide tackles per 90 (0.68) among left-backs in the league than he has and he ranks in the 78th percentile for blocks (1.41 per 90).

Kerkez simply puts his body in the line and we saw that against City when he made an incredible block to thwart Bernardo Silva's effort.

At the same time, offensively he's averaging 0.20 assists per 90. Last season, that would have ranked him above Andy Robertson (0.14) and still ranks him above the Scotsman this season as well.

Kerkez has this explosive speed and energy when in possession that makes him a huge threat. The prospect of him linking up with someone like Luis Diaz would be extraordinary on Liverpool's left flank.

To put it simply, the Hungarian is a special talent. The fact that Liverpool are interested in signing him should get everyone super excited.

This is a transfer that could cement Richard Hughes' status as the worthy Michael Edwards successor we all want him to become.
