Liverpool transfers: Reason why Lloyd Kelly favours Newcastle move revealed

Bournemouth’s in-demand defender Lloyd Kelly is leaning towards a move to Newcastle at the end of his contract this summer, according to reports. 

Earlier this week, French outlet Foot Mercato claimed that verbal agreement had been reached between the defender and Eddie Howe’s side over the terms of a free transfer. 

Although reports of a completed deal have been dampened down by the Telegraph’s Luke Edwards, it is nonetheless acknowledged that left-sided Kelly remains on the Magpies’ list. 

Capable of playing at left back or the left side of central defence, Kelly’s signing from Bristol City back in 2019 was overseen by Richard Hughes, the incoming Liverpool sporting director, who was then the south coast side's Technical Director. 

He cost Bournemouth around £13 million and has been a consistent performer - when fit - for the Cherries. 

With his contract running, the 25-year-old was seen as an attractive option for a host of top clubs with Liverpool, Arsenal, Tottenham, Juventus and AC Milan all linked with his signature. 

Although Spurs and Liverpool were previously reported to be in 'advanced discussions' for Kelly, it now appears Newcastle are in pole position.

And the reason why Kelly would favour a link-up with former Bournemouth manager Howe at St. James’ Park has now been revealed. 

CaughtOffside reports that Kelly is attracted by Newcastle’s offer of a longer contract as well as a better prospect of playing first-team football next season. 

The North East outfit have suffered a defensive injury crisis this season with Sven Botman and Jamaal Lascalles both having their campaigns ended early due to ACL injuries. 

Liverpool in need of defensive reinforcements

Liverpool too appear short of cover in the backline with Joel Matip about to leave at the end of his contract and considerable uncertainty over utility man Joe Gomez. 

Losing out on Kelly would be a blow to Hughes, considering he’s worked with the centre back previously, but there are other options on the table. 

The Reds are reportedly in the chase for Tosin Adarabioyo, although they are behind Newcastle and Manchester United in the queue, while Willian Pacho and Goncalo Inacio represent more high-cost options for the sporting director and incoming head coach Arne Slot.
