Arne Slot provided an update on the future of Joe Gomez in his press conference this morning, admitting that ‘everything can change’ amidst rumours of a departure away from Anfield for the 27-year-old.

Speaking to the media ahead of his second Premier League fixture in charge of the Reds, Slot spoke on a potential return to the team for Gomez when Liverpool face Brentford on Sunday.

“He's worked really hard since he came back, but he didn't play a lot at the Euros," noted Slot. “When he came back in the first sessions he couldn't train the whole sessions, so we had to manage his load a bit. That was also the reason why he wasn't in the team last Saturday."

“But this week he had a good week in terms of load and how much he could do with the team. It's been a good week for him and for us until now."

Gomez played a vital role under Jurgen Klopp, particularly in the latter stages of the German manager’s time as Liverpool boss. The defender made 32 appearances in the Premier League for Liverpool last season, playing a vital role in ensuring the Reds returned to the UEFA Champions League after a season exile in the UEFA Europa League.

However, it remains unclear as to whether Gomez will remain in Merseyside given recent interest from Newcastle United. The Daily Mail suggested earlier this week that Eddie Howe’s side are monitoring Gomez ahead of the summer transfer deadline, despite a £45 million deal for the defender previously falling through as a consequence of a breakdown in negotiations between the two clubs.

Will Joe Gomez leave Liverpool?

Regarding the future of Gomez as a Liverpool player, Slot declared: “at this moment, I'm expecting everyone to be here," however he accepts that “everything can change”.

It is yet to be seen whether Gomez will be included in Slot’s starting XI as they take on Brentford in his first competitive home fixture as Liverpool boss.
