After a long wait, Liverpool are reportedly on the verge of securing their first signing of the summer transfer window.

After protracted negotiations, Valencia's Giorgi Mamardashvili is set to join the club in a deal worth in the region of £30 million.

After several weeks of intense negotiations, it appears that the Reds are close to agreeing a deal that would see the 22-year-old rejoin the Spanish side on loan and move to Merseyside next summer at the earliest.

According to Relevo, Valencia and Liverpool have reportedly agreed on a fixed transfer fee, with ongoing discussions focused on the structure of add-ons and potential variables.

The Georgia keeper’s impending move has certainly raised a number of eyebrows, particularly given the presence of both Alisson Becker at Anfield.

However, according to James Pearce, who spoke on the Walk On Podcast, this acquisition represents a long-term strategic move by Liverpool.

Mamardashvili is 'undervalued'

Pearce explained that the club views Mamardashvili as a bargain, considering him undervalued in the current market. He indicated that the Reds are planning for the future with this signing, potentially securing a quality goalkeeper at a cut-price rate.

“It has been explained to me as long-term succession planning,” Pearce said.

“Liverpool rate this guy incredibly highly, and they believe he is on the market for a price that undervalues him.

"They think it is a good long-term investment to loan him out and bring him in at a later point.”

A coup for Liverpool

Mamardashvili’s performances in La Liga last season had already drawn significant attention even prior to his standout performances with Georgia at Euro 2024 which now make the reported £30 million fee appears even more of a coup for Liverpool.

Despite the current strength of Liverpool’s goalkeeping options, the plan is reportedly to loan Mamardashvili out initially, allowing him to continue his development at Mestalla before integrating him into the first team in the future — likely when Alisson decides his time with the club is over.

This is why speculation continues over Liverpool chasing yet another goalkeeper to replace the wantaway Caoimhin Kelleher.

Even though it may take some time before Mamardashvili makes his mark at Anfield, this move could prove to be a masterstroke for Liverpool.
