When Liverpool signed Ryan Gravenberch from Bayern Munich for approximately £34m, not a tear was shed in Bavaria.

The Dutch midfielder had a tough time in Germany and was frustrated at a lack of minutes. For their part, Bayern were happy to get a good transfer fee for a player they didn’t see being capable of starting in their midfield.

Fast forward just over 12 months and Gravenberch is one of Arne Slot’s most important players and arguably the main reason, aside from Mohamed Salah, that Liverpool are challenging on all fronts this season.

Those responsible at Bayern for his departure must be kicking themselves, and a new report says that they are now looking at buying one of Liverpool’s stars for themselves.

Bayern Munich want to sign Cody Gakpo

A report from Spanish outlet Fichajes says that Bayern Munich are interested in signing Gravenberch’s national team colleague Cody Gakpo.

Gakpo has been in brilliant form for Slot in recent weeks, and a transfer away from Anfield seems highly unlikely due to his popularity and importance to the side.

However, the report states that “financial needs and constant market pressure” could force Liverpool into a sale as they continue to restructure their squad. Any new contracts for Virgil van Dijk, Mohamed Salah and Trent Alexander-Arnold will be costly, and there are a number of positions that need strengthening.

It’s a situation that could see Bayern pounce with an opportunistic bid but it would still take close to £65m to secure a deal, according to the report. The fact that it would mean taking one of Liverpool’s talented Dutch stars not long after they let one go the other way would be an added bonus.

But Gakpo’s form and consistency from the left hand side means Liverpool fans should take the possibility of a transfer away from the club with a pinch of salt.

Having signed for the club two years ago this January, Gakpo’s development has been a joy to watch for Liverpool fans. He’s been one of the most-improved players under Slot, and long may it continue.
