Liverpool revealed to be IN TALKS for Anthony Gordon; offer could arrive this weekend
Liverpool are in talks with Newcastle United over Anthony Gordon - but a sticking point has seen the Reds back down.
The Daily Mail reports that Liverpool were in talks with Newcastle United this week over a move for Anthony Gordon. The England star is a boyhood Red and has openly talked about it.
And Gordon is aware of the talks. While he's not pressuring Newcastle into a sale, the feeling is that he'd be very open to moving to Anfield, despite his Everton past.
But talks have broken down for now. Newcastle want Jarell Quansah in the deal but Liverpool aren't willing to include him - that saw the Reds back away without an offer.
However, the report makes it clear that this isn't necessarily the end and talks could resume this weekend. Potentially, an offer could arrive at Newcastle if things go well.
But it would almost certainly be an offer without Quansah involved.
Liverpool in Anthony Gordon talks
Newcastle are in desperate need of cash as they attempt to dodge Premier League spending rules. They are on course to be in breach of them, bringing a points deduction next season.
Selling Gordon would help immeasurably but they're not necessarily after straight cash. Bringing in players through swap deals is the plan - and they're currently trying to strike something similar with Nottingham Forest.
It's a trick we've seen Aston Villa perform with Juventus this summer, while Chelsea are supposedly trying to sign Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall from Leicester City with a swap deal.
Liverpool, though, don't have too many players they'd willingly swap. Quansah certainly shouldn't be one of those - he's a homegrown player with incredible potential.
We'd love to see Gordon at Anfield next season but it seems like things are a little ways off that. We imagine a forward would need to leave, for one, and Luis Diaz has been linked with a departure.
So let's see how things play out. A lot of moving parts here - maybe Liverpool can put them in place.
