Liverpool transfers: Newcastle plan showdown talks with Anthony Gordon

Newcastle United have appointed a new sporting director in Paul Mitchell and one of his first tasks will be to sort out the future of Liverpool target Anthony Gordon. 

Gordon, 23, was the subject of transfer interest from the Reds last week after Newcastle floated the idea of a deal in order to ease some of their profit and sustainability rules concerns. 

A move ultimately failed to transpire with Liverpool transfer chiefs walking away from talks due to Newcastle’s demands. 

The north east side were seeking a high price - thought to be around £100 million in total - and also had one eye on taking Jarell Quansah to St. James’ Park as part of any negotiations. 

While Gordon is admired at Anfield that was one step too far for the club to consider. 

Nonetheless it has been reported that the England international’s head has been turned due to perceived interest from his boyhood club and it remains to be seen where the winger’s long-term future lies. 

Gordon set for Newcastle talks

ChronicleLive reports that the club are currently unable to predict whether Liverpool will come back in for Gordon before the end of the summer and that Mitchell is set for talks with his representatives. 

The ex-Everton star is not expected back until well after England’s interest in Euro 2024 is ended and will miss the first part of pre-season due to extended holidays. 

Former Monaco chief Mitchell must also ascertain the level of interest on the part of Liverpool regarding Gordon. 

Gordon is under contract at Newcastle until 2026, having signed in winter 2023, and the report states that a new deal could be on the cards. 

Newcastle PSR concerns eased

It also adds that several Newcastle players have been left bemused by the club’s decision to enter into transfer talks over outgoings. 

Eddie Howe’s side eased their financial concerns by selling Yankuba Minteh to Brighton and Elliott Anderson to Nottingham Forest but could yet have to withstand Liverpool pressure for Gordon before the window is out. 

Liverpool let Gordon go when he was 11 and he opted to join Everton. He made the breakthrough at Goodison Park before forcing a £45m move to Newcastle last year.
