'Work that one out!' - Pundit remains 'baffled' by £35m Liverpool signing
Alexis Mac Allister was the best player on display as Liverpool emerged 2-1 winners in a hard-fought Premier League game against his former club Brighton at Anfield on Sunday.
The Argentina international is assembling quite the season as the Reds chase the Premier League title and is surely now among the contenders to be named as the club’s player of the year.
The 25-year-old crafted a beautiful assist for Mohamed Salah against Brighton and his performance earned the praise of managers, team-mates and pundits alike.
Signed for only £35 million from the Seagulls during last summer’s transfer window, Mac Allister will go down as the signing of the season in the eyes of many observers, particularly in light of the fees paid for other midfielders last year.
Chelsea signed Moises Caicedo from Brighton for a £105m fee and has scarcely made an impression for the Blues as their season fizzles out into insignificance.
Midfielder partner Enzo Fernandez, signed last January from Benfica for around the same price, has hardly fared much better.
And the business Liverpool managed to pull off has again been praised, this time by a Brighton legend in Glenn Murray.
“I think that’s some of the best business of the summer, £35m for him,” the former striker told the Kelly and Wrighty Show.
“He played alongside Enzo Fernandez [for Argentina], he went for £95m, he played with Moises Caicedo at Brighton, he went for £105m.
"Liverpool got him for £35m, work that one out? I’m not saying he’s better than them, but he’s just as good as them.”
Mac Allister at his creative best in recent weeks
Mac Allister has been at his creative best in recent weeks, with the form of Wataru Endo allowing the World Cup winner to break out of defensive midfield and push further forward.
Liverpool have been rewarded with two goals and four assists in Mac Allister’s last five league games.
