Here we break down one of the biggest Liverpool transfer rumours of the week: Luis Diaz to Chelsea.

Liverpool find themselves in roughly 1,000 transfer rumours a week. They're one of the biggest clubs in the world, after all - people like to print their name.

Of course, 999 of those rumours are nonsense. It isn't easy to pick out what ones might be true, either.

So here's a dissection of one of the most interesting Liverpool transfer rumours to appear this week: Luis Diaz to Chelsea.

Could this actually happen? Should it happen?

Here's what we think.

Luis Diaz to Chelsea

Colombian outlet Antenna 2 reports that Chelsea are interested in signing Diaz. They're currently preparing a move for the forward and believe they can sign him from Liverpool.

That's the line. Chelsea hope to convince the forward to sign for them by making him their highest-paid player - or at least, in line with the other top earners at the club.

The report claims Liverpool would be open to selling Diaz as they don't want his contract to wind down. There's interest from elsewhere, too, but Chelsea's poor form has them shopping for a player in his prime.

Diaz could be the man to revitalise their team.

Would Liverpool sell Luis Diaz?

Yes, they certainly could. Anfield Watch exclusively revealed this weekend that Liverpool are looking at a dramatic overhaul of their forward line.

Diaz would be part of that overhaul. Liverpool are expected to move him on this summer in a big sale.

The Colombian remains on his initial contract with the Reds, having never been given the pay rise usually offered to performing players. It justifies why Diaz would want to leave, certainly, and shows that Liverpool aren't totally enamoured with the forward.

While there have been further contract discussions this season, Diaz reportedly rejected Liverpool's offer. It wasn't high enough and the Reds quite plainly don't view Diaz as one of their elite players.

Thus a sale makes sense. Diaz's contract expires in 2027 and Liverpool could sell this summer for 'full price'. Wait another year and that value will drop sharply as he prepares to enter the final year.

Could Chelsea sign Diaz?

It's an interesting one. Diaz is now 28 and older than Chelsea have been signing under their new ownership.

Their entire business model has been to buy the brightest young talents around, tie them down to incredibly long contracts, and watch their value rise. Only, the value has risen for only a marginal few of those players.

And so a move for a player in his prime does actually make some sense. Especially as Chelsea have consistently struggled to find a winger who can deliver for them.

Jadon Sancho, who they have an obligation to buy in the summer, hasn't delivered much while on loan. Mykhailo Mudryk has been an incredible flop and failed a drug test this season.

Moving for more of a 'certainty' in Diaz would be justified and could perhaps move the Blues into a 'phase two' of their rebuild. At the same time, it would still require them to move away from their current transfer policy - and that might be a big ask.

Do we think it'll happen?

We don't think Liverpool would have many qualms about selling Diaz to a Premier League side. They just don't seem to rate him highly enough for that to be a problem.

The real question is whether Diaz himself would want the move. Clubs like Barcelona have been consistently linked with him, while Chelsea may not be in the UEFA Champions League next season.

That's a tough sell to a player who at 28 may not have too many years left at the elite level. It'll depend, then, on Diaz's motivation.

The final Merseyside Derby at Goodison Park will kick-off at 19:30 GMT and will be broadcast live on TNT Sports 1.

If it's a big pay day, then Chelsea have a really good chance of getting him - unless interest from Saudi Arabia appears. But if Diaz is looking to step up and become a true star, something Liverpool haven't really (rightly or wrongly) put him in a position to do, then the Blues will likely fail in any pursuit.

We'll side with the 'no' on this one but it's not one to entirely rule out.
